The First Physics Engineer graduate at UdeC is a member of CEFOP

On Monday 21 March, the Ph.D. student in Physical Sciences and researcher of the Optical Instrumentation and Remote Sensing Division of CEFOP, Antonieta Silva, successfully present his thesis before the university committee, to earn the degree on Physics Engineer, becoming the first student at the University of Concepción to do so.

Antonieta’s work was based on a experimental research, under the support of Dr. Carlos Saavedra, called “Construction and characterization of a tunable diode laser” which featured the installation of a diode laser based on the design of K . B. Mac Adam, A. Steinbach and C. Wieman. “The main objective of this study was to construct a laser that could be tuned in wavelength and held line widths less than those offered by the market and also be low cost” said the engineer.

About her been the first Physics Engineer  of the university, Antonieta said “I’m proud to be a pioneer, to be the only student in almost all areas of specialty make me lead the way of those who came later and it makes me feel I’ve contributed something. It has been a remarkable experience”.

Concerning her future plans, she said that for the moment she’ll continue with her doctoral studies, and working on the LIDAR project of the Optical Instrumentation and Remote Sensing Division, with Dr. Elena Montilla and Rodrigo Fuentes, where she currently is in charge of design and implementation of the data analysis.
