The project consists of the environmental monitoring to generate alerts to health risks, based on the processing of satellite images to study the correlation of sea surface temperature (SST) of the coastal zone and the increase in concentration of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus (VP) measured on shellfish extracted at the same zone, which will allow authorities of the Fishery National Service (Sernapesca) and Ministerial Regional Secretariat of Health (SEREMI of Health) of the Biobío region complement existing monitoring systems and determine the risk to human health by the presence of VP in the areas of shellfish extraction, thus reducing the incidence and costs of treating those affected, whereas allows to focus control in the process of extraction and handling of seafood, plus timely information to consumers.
Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a bacterium of the same family as those that cause cholera. In Chile can be found in coastal areas. The project was presented with the support of the Biobío’s region SEREMI of Health, the Department of Epidemiology of the Health Ministry, the Health Ministry and Sernapesca. As result, it is expected that this project would enable the authorities of Sernapesca and Health Ministry, to predict the risks to human health by the presence of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus in shellfish extraction areas, reducing therefore, the incidence and treatment costs of those affected, and allowing to focus in the control of the extraction process and handling of seafood, plus generating relevant information to consumers. The methodology is based on the determination of the correlation between sea surface temperature and the occurrence of Vibrio Parahaemolyticus on the coast of the Biobío region. The sea temperature will be monitored by processing satellite data, which is obtained on a daily basis by the Satellite Teledetection Laboratory (LTS). In parallel, the center will develop a scientific submarine monitoring, responsible for the extraction of shellfish to measure the concentration of VP. The project makes more sense on this zone because Biobío’s region is one of the most affected by outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by Vibrio Parahaemolyticus associated with consumption of seafood in the summer (December-April), with the consequent economic and social impact that each infected poses to national health system. It is expected that the products generated by the project will complement the current monitoring systems, improving the response times to potential outbreaks of gastroenteritis caused by eating raw shellfish, which eventually will result in a decrease in the number of cases. , Universidad de Concepción, Optical Instrumentation and Teledetection Technologies, 2010-10-01

Forestal Celco S.A. has commissioned to CEFOP and DSS a study on the technical-economic assessment of technology alternatives that could help to reduce accident rates on forest harvesting tasks. The study considers a stage of field evaluation of the regular activities of forestry tasks developed by CELCO, a search for technology alternatives that help to create security systems, technical and economic evaluation of these alternatives and eventually field tests of alternatives that are currently on the market or the ability to integrate technologies., Universidad de Concepción, Optical Instrumentation and Teledetection Technologies, 2010-01-01
