Optoelectronics

The optoelectronics group is focused on fundamental and applied research on sensor systems based upon sensor arrays and optical detectors for the Chilean economical clusters, Astronomical and Medicine. Optoelectronics provides innovative wireless solutions for quality control and for monitoring and controlling process in a broad range of industries related to the Chilean economical clusters. We will address the challenge of providing a theoretical framework for using imaging sensors in controlling distributed parameter processes. In Infrared Focal-Plane array technology we intend to extend a multidimensional opto-electronic model in order to design digital filters for on-line infrared imaging calibration. We expect to develop high resolution methods for infrared imaging and apply infrared imaging technology in Medicine and food industry. Research on diffractive optics is focused on both exploiting the polarizing properties of LCDs and developing a new paradigm in diffractive optical elements design, introducing the polarization information. It is expected to design a polarizing diffractive programmable optical element which generates not only desired transmission amplitude but moreover a controlled distribution of polarized states in the far field diffraction, for being used in optical tweezers. Additionally, biospeckle or dynamic speckle is of wide interest to biological, medical and industrial applications. We expect to determine the viability of the seeds by means of dynamic temporal history speckle pattern (THSP) analysis. Our research will contribute to develop diverse software to THSP analysis and a mathematical model to simulate and predict experimental results. In Infrared pattern recognition we will assess the performance of different classification methods applied to infrared face images and its response to FPN and the improvements when non-uniformity techniques are applied. We expect to apply our research results on face pattern recognition for security applications and access control.
